Abstract

BACKGROUND: Suicide risk assessment is a top-priority objective in current suicidology and one of the ways to reach it is to deepen our understanding of motives behind suicide attempts. The Inventory of Motivations for Suicide Attempts (IMSA) developed by A. May and D. Klonsky measures a variety of theoretically grounded intrapersonal and interpersonal motives. The paper presents the results of the study that investigated the validity of this measure in the Russian sample.

METHODS: The sample consisted of 522 inpatient adolescents 12–17 years old (M=14.51±1.52), including 425 girls and 97 boys. All adolescents were hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital due to a suicide attempt or suicidal intentions, or had a history of suicidal behavior. To test convergent validity the Russian version of the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (Menshikova et al., 2016) and Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure (Boyce, Parker, 1989; Razvaliaeva, Polskaya, 2021) were used.

RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the original 10-factor structure did not have a good fit. After modifications and removal of 12 items an 8-factor structure emerged, which had the following scales: (1) hopelessness; (2) psychache; (3) escape; (4) burdensomeness; (5) low belongingness; (6) fearlessness; (7) problem-solving; (8) interpersonal motivations. A hierarchical scale – intrapersonal motivations – also emerged; it combined scales 1–7. All the scales in the Russian version of the Inventory of Motivations for Suicide Attempts displayed satisfactory internal and retest reliability and statistically significant relationships with scales from the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire and Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure.

CONCLUSION: Understanding subjective reasons for suicide attempts can be useful for revealing early markers of suicide and preventing adolescent suicides. Russian version of the Inventory of Motivations for Suicide Attempts is a reliable and useful tool for the assessment of these subjective reasons in adolescent inpatients with suicidal behavior.
